One of the only things I remember about my 2001 trip to Italy is this statue by Bernini at the Borghese Gallery. Daphne turns herself into a laurel tree to save herself from Apollo. And at the bottom of the statue:
“Those who love to pursue fleeting forms of pleasure, in the end find only leaves and bitter berries in their hands.”
This is the most stunning sculpture you will ever see.
